5 Tips For Budget Travelers
Updated: Aug 22, 2022
Traveling is usually an expense that people can't afford comfortably. People tend to have to save and take trips sparingly.
Follow these tips so you can limit yourself less and travel more.
Time Flexibility
If your schedule allows it, then check out which days have cheaper flight availability and request those days off. Being limited to specific days can be the main cause of high flight tickets. Usually, flights are what drastically affect the overall costs of your trip. My favorite site to shop around for tickets is Skyscanner. It allows you to search for the cheapest tickets to your specified destination. Check out my post on that here.
Avoid Fees
Fees can quickly start adding up if you're not careful. Here are some examples of fees you can avoid.
Get your passport in advance to avoid paying the expedited fee.
Always verify the measurement and weight requirements to avoid any baggage fees.
Many credit cards charge foreign transactions fees, check out my post on which travel credit cards are the best.
Exchanging rates can be a hassle so to avoid any stress get a Charles Schwab card so you can take out cash from any ATM. For more information you can visit my blog on the Schwab Debit Card here.
Overseas medical emergencies, cancelled flight, and lost luggage can all be a terrible and pricey disaster, get travel insurance to help you with these issues.
Use Rewards
Rewards points can get you perks and discounts that you should not ignore. Find your favorite airlines and hotels and get memberships to receive exclusive deals. Do your best to always use these airlines and hotels to rack up points. If you don't want to be constricted, then you can also add up points and rewards by using a travel credit card. If you have good credit, then check out this list of great travel credit card options.
Visit a Cheaper Location
Don't be afraid to visit a less touristy destination to save some money. If you want to visit Europe, then consider visiting a Central or Eastern Europe country like Hungary instead of a more expensive and touristy Western European country like Italy. Within your country of choice there are also cheaper cities that you can visit as opposed to the main city, for example instead of Paris, France you can explore Bordeaux, Lyon, or Montpellier. Often these cities also offer a more authentic experience that can enrich your trip.
Use a Travel Agent
There is a common misconception, but travel agents are not only for wealthy individuals. Travel agents usually make money solely on commission and don't charge exorbitant fees. Agents have partnerships to get you better rates for your trip and to make the experience better for you. Consider using an agent for your next trip.
