9 Must See Attractions in Japan
Japan has become an increasingly popular travel destinations. If you are wondering what there is to see then take a look at this comprehensive list of attractions in Japan to ignite your excitement.
1. Shirakawa-go
This historic village is located in a mounatnous region. Its location led to it being quite isolated for a lengthy period. It contains Gassho-style farm homes, focused on rearing silkworms and cultivating mulberry trees. The style of these homes is unique from all Japan, there are only a total of 3 villages with homes like these. They beautifully capture a Japanese traditional lifestyle.
2. Fushimi Inari Shrine
Also known as, Thousands Torri Gate, this shrine is located in Kyoto. Known world wide for its large quantity of Shinto shrines. You can hike through them all; it'll take you about 2-3 hours. If you don't desire to then don't worry there is a turnaround much sooner, you'll walk approximately 30 minutes. After, enjoy all the beautiful buildings and take in Kyoto. If you stay the night you may see geishas walking around at night.
3. Miyajima Island
Miyajima has both Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines representing the significant influence of both religions on Japanese culture. You will also see some deers brought over from Nara. Though this island is most known for the floating torri gate of Itsukushima Shrine. Snap a picture of the beautiful gate in the water.
4. Kamakura
Kamakura attracts many people to the Giant Buddha and it is definitely worth the visit but my personal favorite was the Hasedera Temple. It has stunning koi ponds, a small cave, and stunning views of the beach. A cave? Yes, a cave with a shrine. Yet another coexistence of Buddhism and Shintoism in Japan which you will see all over. After a visit to the cave you can hike up the hillside to enjoy the soothing view of the beach and small coastal city. One of my personal favorite temples in Japan.
5. Shibuya
How could you possibly visit Japan without crossing the famous Shibuya? Upon arrival at Shibuya station make your way to see the Hachiko statues representing loyalty. Hachiko, a Japanese Akita, would meet his owner at Shibuya after he got off of work. His owner died at his job and never returned home but Hachiko would return to the station every day for more than 9 years in hopes of seeing his owner again until his own passing. Take a picture with this heartfelt statue and prepare yourself to cross the busiest crosswalk in the world. An average of 2,500 cross at a time totaling to about 2.4 million people in a single day. You can get a reservation to the sky tower and see the crossing and beautiful Tokyo skyline for yourself.
6. Snow Monkeys
The Japanese macaque, known more popularly as snow monkeys, live the northernmost than any non-human primate. They favor the snow and live all over in the mountainous regions but if you want to have a good chance of seeing some then you can go to Jigokudani Monkey Park.
7. Mt. Fuji
Mt. Fuji is a must see. The active volcano has a stunning symmetrical shape. Many go to the 5th Station to see the top. You can do this but going somewhere you can see the whole view is much more enchanting. Visit Hakone, located by Lake Ashi for a rewarding view. If you are up for an entertaining show then many also enjoy the pirate themed boat rides.
8. Nara
The Todaiji Temple is home to a giant Buddha statue housed by one of the largest wooden structures in the world. Enjoy the beautiful temple and surrounding nature. After, see the deer at the Nara Deer Park. These deers have very cleverly been conditioned to bow at you as a request for a cracker. Be careful as they might get a bit demanding but feel free to buy some crackers and bow at the deer. The crackers will be held together by an edible paper so don't hesitate letting them eat it along with the cracker.
9. Dotonbori
Osaka is the second largest city in Japan and has so much to see. Best known for its food so stop by Dotonbori and eat 'til you drop. Some well known and delicious staples are Takoyaki(fried octopus ball), Okonomiyaki(savory pancake), and Kushikatsu(skewers). If you go at night then you can take in the radiant city lights.
